Chiang Mai (meaning ‘new city’) is the capital of Chiang Mai Province in Thailand. It is scenically situated in the forested foothills of the Himalayas astride Ping River. This Thai city is also known as ‘Rose of the North’ because underneath its flamboyant facade is a distinct undercurrent of antiquity. You can find one of Asia’s most unusual museums of insects and a zip-line that runs above the 1500 years old rainforests here, just as easily as you would find 30 magnificent Buddhist temples made in typical Burmese, Sri Lankan, and Lan Na Thai styles.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is a 14th century Buddha temple in Chiang Mai that assumes equal reverence from Buddhists and Hindus for its rare combination of Buddhist and Hindu deities. A legend says that it is built over a piece of shoulder bone of Lord Buddha. This golden-mounted temple contains two statues of Lord Buddha- one is a golden statue in seated position and the other is a meditating Emerald Buddha seated in yogic posture. The latter is made of jade or jasper and is flanked by a statue of the Hindu deity Lord Ganesha to mark an extremely rare configuration.
Wat Chiang ManBuilt in 1297 AD, Wat Chiang Man is the oldest Buddhist temple in Chiang Mai. It assumes a pivotal position in all the city’s temples because it contains some of the most respected Buddhist insignias in the city. You should visit it for the country’s oldest statue of Lord Buddha that stands with an alms bowl and has the year 1465 CE engraved onto its base. Also of note here are a 10 cm tall statue called the Crystal Buddha and a stone slab called Phra Sila that depicts Lord Buddha taming an elephant.
Wat Phra SinghA stellar combination of beauty and royalty, the Buddhist temple of Wat Phra Singh was bestowed the status of Royal Temple of First Grade in 1935. This 14th century temple is home to an alpha grade Lan Na architectural assembly, which is centrally hallmarked by a mid-14th century statue of Lord Buddha, and is flanked by some stunning murals on either sides.
