A visit to San Francisco is the trip of a lifetime. Getting around is easy, as public transportation options are varied and affordable. All you need is a sense of adventure and a plan.
Shuttle Vans
For affordability and convenience, utilize one of the Shuttle Vans that visit the airports. While you may be sharing your ride with other passengers, the service is door-to-door. The Transportation Coordinator can call for you at the Arrivals area, but reserving your ride online or over an 800 line is the best way to obtain a discount.
Rental Cars
Before you rent a vehicle, carefully consider whether you’ll need one during your trip. A car is convenient for day trips, but may not be necessary if you plan to stay in the city.
TIP: Be aware that streets in San Francisco are incredibly steep, as are the parking fines. Parking at hotels, restaurants, theaters, attractions and street meters can be costly.
Cable Cars
The iconic cable cars of San Francisco are not only a treat for travelers, but a method by which residents commute within the city. The cable cars run between 6am and midnight everyday, making their way along the steep hills.
TIP: All fares are one-way, with discounts for Seniors. You can also purchase an all-day pass, which allows for transfer to Muni buses. Because these are track vehicles, they are likely to be late on rainy days when streets are slippery.
Muni
The Muni refers to the city municipal streetcar and bus system. While they’re bound to be crowded at rush hour, they are inexpensive and offer free transfers. For greater savings, purchase a pass for one day, 3 days or 7 days. These are on sale at Muni outlets and cable car turnaround sites.
Public Transit
The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is an excellent way to travel. BART offers both elevated and subway trains that run on over 104 miles of track. This includes 44 different stations throughout the area and a train from Oakland International Airport into the city.
TIP: Check their website for schedules, fares and trip planners.
Uber and Lyft
Ride-sharing services like Uber and Lyft are extremely popular. This require a smart-phone, a downloaded app and a credit card. Make your reservation at least one half hour before your departure time, as street traffic can be hectic.
TIP: Don’t forget that rush hour traffic in the city can drive up your fare considerably, so it is always best to get an estimate first.
Taxi Services
Taxi cabs are closely regulated by the city and a convenient way to travel especially for first-time visitors. They are relatively easy to flag down at hotels, popular restaurants and attractions. To avoid a wait, call first to make a reservation and ask for an “estimated time of arrival.”
