Got one of the cheap flights to Miami? If so, that means you’ll have some cash in your pocket to take a day trip. For when the city gets too hot to handle, that’s the best thing to do. Biscayne National Park
Bring some cash for a park pass. From manatees and birds to 500 varieties of fish, Biscayne is bursting with wildlife. Snorkeling is the best way to see one of the world’s largest coral reefs here. The water is so clear that you can see every intricate detail beneath the surface, with hundreds of varieties of tropical fish. You can also dive, kayak, canoe, fish or catch lobster with the proper permits. If you have limited time and want to make the most of it, take one of the park’s guided tours.
The Everglades
Just 20 miles out of Miami rests the famous Everglades. Home to endangered species such as manatees and Florida panthers. You’ll be able to see the world’s largest mahogany tree here on Mahogany Hammock Trail. Although Shark River is not home to sharks, it is the best place to see birds, alligators, and turtles. Since the Everglades are vast, the best way to enjoy them without getting lost is on a guided tour. (There are tram tours if you prefer to stay on land.) For aquatic tours, reserve a seat on an airboat to enjoy a thrilling ride. And to avoid the humidity, visit between December and April. Theater Of The Sea
This short drive out of the city is almost worth the trek alone, since you’ll gain gorgeous views of the magnificent Overseas highway. And once you arrive at the Theater of the Sea, you are part of the show. Swim with affectionate dolphins, play with friendly sea lions, watch the marine life shows and take an adventure cruise. Plan to arrive when the attraction opens for a full day of hands-on fun and enjoy the gorgeous sunset on your drive home.
Freeport
Grab your passport for this nautical adventure. There are many day boat tours to Freeport in the Grand Bahamas, so be sure to pick one with good customer reviews. Take a ferry for a leisurely ride or a faster boat if you’re in a hurry. Bimini is a quick cruise option with onboard gambling, drinks, food and entertainment. While in Freeport, visit Grand Lucaya Beach to enjoy this paradise’s tranquil perfection. You can shop at the nearby marketplace, enjoy a cool drink or wade in the crystal-clear waves.
Bill Baggs State Park
The main attraction at Bill Baggs is the Cape Florida Lighthouse, which is Miami-Dade County’s oldest structure, having been built in the 1820s. The park also boasts over a mile of white sandy beaches, clear water, and plenty of fishing opportunities. There are two restaurants where you can enjoy authentic Cuban food. If you prefer, grab some fresh seafood and vegetables for your cooler before leaving, and use one of the picnic areas to grill your own picnic on the beach.
