The Dallas Metroplex is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the United States. The city and suburbs are home to museums, art galleries, championship sports teams and global companies. Whether your flights to Dallas are for business or pleasure, here are a few tips for getting around the city at your own pace.
Traveling to and from Love Field
Love Field is located within the city limits just a few minutes from downtown Dallas. Connecting flights operated by Southwest Airlines, Delta and Virgin America typically land at this airport. Bus 524 will take you from the airport to the light rail station at Inwood/Love Field where you can take the orange or green line to Market Center and downtown Dallas. Airport shuttles, taxis and rental cars are also available.
Transportation from Dallas Ft. Worth International Airport
The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is one of the nation’s busiest transportation hubs. It’s served by American Airlines and two dozen major air carriers. DFW is 20 miles northwest of Dallas. Two light rail lines and a number of ground transportation companies will take you to Dallas or Fort Worth. The orange light rail line has service between DFW and downtown Dallas seven days a week. Take the Terminal Link Shuttle to the light rail station in Terminal A. The Trinity Railway Express (TRE) goes back and forth from Union Station in Dallas to the airport and Fort Worth. The service hours are limited, and the train doesn’t run on Sundays. Use the shuttle for remote south parking to reach the Centre Port TRE Station. Car rental shuttles pick up passengers on the lower level of each terminal.
Public Transportation in Dallas
Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) has 200,000 daily passengers. It manages 90 miles of light rail track, 27 bus routes and 12,300 stops. We recommend DART passes because they are an excellent value and the service is convenient for traveling to landmarks and attractions throughout the metropolitan area. From Dallas, Amtrak rail service is available to Chicago, Oklahoma City and other destinations.

Traveling by Car
Exploring Dallas by car is practical and convenient if you avoid rush hour traffic jams. Pay attention when traveling north and south on Interstate 35 because the road splits. I-35W goes toward Forth Worth, and I-35E goes to Dallas. The Interstate 635 beltway, also called the Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway, passes through Farmers Branch, Addison, Balch Springs and suburban cities in Dallas County. Take interstates 20 or 30 for destinations east and west of Dallas. The Central Expressway travels from north Dallas to downtown. It becomes Interstate 45 below I-30. There are a number of toll roads in the Dallas Metroplex, so a rental car company will bill you separately for these charges.
When traveling in Dallas, check the news or radio for traffic reports and construction information. Use DART maps and timetables to ensure that the public transportation system you want to use is available, especially if you’re arriving very early, on Sunday or on a holiday when service might be limited or suspended. Understanding transportation options can help you visit more attractions and enjoy convenient travel in the city.
