Best Museums to Check Out in Dallas

If you’ve only got a few days between your flights to Dallas and back home, or even if you live there year-round, you may be interested in checking out some of the city’s highly regarded museums. The Dallas-Fort Worth area boasts a variety of museums that cater to history buffs, art lovers and children, and some even offer free admission.

Consider spending a day at one of these museums.

JFK Sixth Floor Museum

There is no other historical collection in the world like JFK Sixth Floor. Combining videos, interviews and artifacts from the tragic assassination of then-President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, the Sixth Floor Museum permanently pays tribute to one of our most famous presidents. Since Dallas is the last place that JFK visited, this museum often features lectures from experts and activities hosted in its hands-on research room. If you’re interested in the history and theories behind the assassination, there’s no better place to look for the truth than at this museum.

The Old Red Museum

The impressive Romanesque-revival style of The Old Red Museum will draw your attention immediately from its surrounding Texas landscape. With a mission to educate visitors and residents about the Dallas County area, this museum features four main areas of displays dedicated to the storied history of the city. You can stare at the 1890s building’s gargoyles, red sandstone walls and impressive turrets all while you revel in the cultural, political and social history of Dallas.

Founded by Ross Perot, this museum dabbles in a wide variety of exhibits. Full-size dinosaur skeletons are on display permanently while impressive traveling exhibits have included the international Bodies collection. Equally impressive is the IMAX theater and the one-acre science park that includes water features. Whether you’re interested in earthquakes, music or virtual reality, you’ll be able to find something that will keep you and your entire group entertained for hours at the Perot.

Nasher Sculpture Center

Across the street from the equally impressive Dallas Museum of Art is the Nasher Sculpture Center. Carefully designed as an indoor-outdoor complex, this building seamlessly integrates galleries in great halls with exhibits in the sun. You’ll be able to marvel at works by famed artists such as Pablo Picasso, Auguste Rodin and Willem de Koonig all within the same visit at this center.
