Museum of the City of New York
If you’re interested in the vast history of the city of New York, from its humble beginnings to today’s modern city, check out this museum. It has over 750,000 artifacts for display, including historic Broadway scripts, tiny dollhouse furniture, and of course plenty of art exhibits. Check in often to see if there are any temporary exhibits or seasonal displays up! You wouldn’t want to miss something cool, just like you wouldn’t want to miss out on cheap flights to New York.
Holographic Studios
This museum holds the biggest collection of motion image holograms in the world, located in a former forge for blacksmiths. The holograms on display have been produced for commercial use, such as in film and television, or simply for artistic reasons. The free museum is also home to a ‘laser laboratory’ and features several digitized celebrities like Andy Warhol. The museum offers classes, tours, and personalized portraits if you want to get the full experience!
The Museum of Mathematics
This fairly new museum opened in 2012, and is the only North American museum to be dedicated to the study of mathematics. Not into math? Barely passed the subject in high school? Don’t worry – we promise this museum is still neat. Most of the exhibits are hands-on, which is great for kids, even better for you. The Museum of Moving Image
This Queens museum focuses on exhibits from both big and small screen, including areas dedicated to how moving images are made, marketed, and shown. In their core exhibition Behind the Screen, enjoy tons of memorabilia, interactive displays, and special temporary exhibits on your visit. There is also a section on video games including classic arcades and home console games, so it’s not all about movies. Coming soon is an exhibition devoted to Jim Henson, best known as the creator of the Muppets. If you want more then just checking out the exhibits, the Museum of the Moving Image also has movie screenings featuring both new and old films.
Morbid Anatomy Museum
One of the lesser known museums in New York is the Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn. This museum has all kinds of intriguing exhibits, including antique medical gadgets, Victorian hair art, and religious artifacts. With a real focus on education, the museum offers an abundance of activities and events for you to learn. Pop into a taxidermy workshop or sign up early for one of their neat lectures on the art of mourning, morbid curiosities, and many more! Admission prices range from between $10 and $12, but children under 12 years old get in for free!
