A lot of people love to try new foods – it’s a great activity to do in your hometown or away. You can spend as little as $10 or as much as $1,000, which, by the way, is much more than flights to New York these days. Whether you’re vacationing in New York, or you happen to live there, you’ll find plenty of eateries that you’ll want to try in this huge, diverse city. The question is, are you brave enough to try some of New York’s weirdest fusion foods? Here’s some of the oddest – yet yummiest – combinations you can find in the Big Apple.
Thanksgiving Dinner Dumplings
Most people already know they love standard Asian-style dumplings, so why not try something a bit new? Mimi Cheng’s Dumplings makes home-made dumplings of fresh, local organic ingredients that are to die for. While you can rely on getting the traditional-style pork dumplings here, you’ll be wowed by their monthly specials. For instance, in November they do a Thanksgiving Dumpling that’s stuffed with turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy. It’s served with house-made cranberry sauce too! Use chopsticks, a fork, or your fingers – whatever gets it into your mouth fastest. If you’re thinking of taking a vacation in the Big Apple, these dumplings alone are enough to make you want to grab one of the cheap flights to New York and go stuff your face!
Matzoh Ball Ramen
Shalom Japan is a fusion-based restaurant in Brooklyn. Maybe one of the best foods to demonstrate their Jewish and Japanese mashup is the Matzoh Ball Ramen. It’s exactly what it sounds like: traditional Japanese ramen served with a single, delicious Matzoh ball. Don’t worry, if you can’t have just one (and we don’t blame you), you can order extra Matzoh too.
Broccoli Dog
Are you eating vegetarian? Dirt Candy, a restaurant specializing in making vegetables delicious, has a Broccoli Dog to replace your standard hot dog. Sound crazy? Somehow, it really does manage to have that ballpark dog flavor! The grilled and smoked stalk of broccoli is served on a hot dog bun with broccoli kraut and BBQ mustard, taking your taste buds on a journey whether you’re a vegetarian or carnivore.
RaviolPizza
At Giovanni Rana Pastificio & Cucina you can enjoy a pizza prepared not on a bread crust, but as a giant ravioli. They call it the RaviolPizza. It’s filled with cheese, tomato sauce, and basil, and then topped with fresh tomatoes and basil after cooking. Slice it up with some friends or eat the whole thing yourself (we won’t tell!).
Salted Caramel Chicken Fingers
Sticky’s Finger Joint has a lot of fusion takes on chicken fingers, from Italian to Korean to Mexican, but their sweet and savory mix is definitely the one to try. These chicken fingers are coated in crushed pretzels and then dipped in salted caramel. The final touch is a sprinkling of salt. It’s the perfect blend of savory and sweet.
Chorizo Ice Cream
This one is only for the truly brave to try – Chorizo Ice Cream. This is a pork sausage ice cream made only at OddFellows Ice Cream Company. While they have plenty of strange mixes with sweet and savory, their chorizo-flavored ice cream is one of the most unique. Their flavors are made in small batches each day, so if you miss out on this one don’t worry – now you just have a reason to go back!
While all of this fusion food makes a culinary expedition in New York mouthwatering indeed, no eating adventure there would be complete without trying one of New York’s famous delis.
