 A London Wake and Bake

Looking for a casual and friendly opportunity to learn how to bake delicious breads and cakes? And maybe make a few friends while you’re at it? Maria Mayerhofer offers her keen baking expertise through her Bake with Maria courses and events in a convenient and comfy “lab” where hands on and practical baking lessons are a lot of fun and provide you with the know how to make delicious baked goods in your very own home.

Having moved to London from Denmark, Maria came to miss the baked goods from back home. With experience baking going back to when she was a little girl, Maria decided to solve the problem by simply starting to bake the Danish goodies for herself. Finding her time in front of the oven considerably more satisfactory than the hours spent behind her desk at work, she soon ditched the day job to start her Bake with Maria venture out of her own kitchen where she taught groups of people how to make their own bread at home.

From French, Italian or Scandinavian bread making to classes on how to make cakes, tarts, pretzels, treats for an afternoon tea and more, Maria’s “high quality, hands-on baking school” proved popular very quickly with many of her classes getting booked completely shortly after being posted online. Feedback from her students was always positive, and the demand for her classes was becoming more than her home kitchen could cope with. Feeling assured that there was a demand for baking classes in London, Maria took the next step and opened up The Baking Lab in the beginning of November 2011.

Located in the Central London area of St John’s Wood at 81 Loudoun Road, NW8 0DQ, The Baking Lab is Maria’s new HQ for all her classes and events. Close to St John’s Wood Tube Station as well as a handful of other Tube and Overground rail stations, it’s easily accessible from just about anywhere in London, and a perfect thing to do for one with flights to London.

With its post-industrial, Scandinavian atmosphere, The Baking Lab is a smart re-use of urban space and features top of the range domestic appliances such as KitchenAid mixers and very practical utensils and baking items. Using domestic appliances in her classes is an important part of Maria’s concept; this way everything that is taught in the lab can be replicated at home without the use of professional ovens or specialized baking equipment.
