An American flag is displayed near Ground Zero Sunday night

Following the death of terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden at the hands of United States Special Forces on Sunday, the US government has issued a travel warning for Americans living and traveling abroad.

The warning urges Americans to limit travel away from their homes and hotels, especially in areas where strong anti-American sentiment exists. Travelers are also urged to avoid large gatherings and demonstrations of any kind.

American diplomatic facilities around the globe remain on high alert as the potential for retaliation runs high.

The warning also encourages Americans abroad to monitor local newscasts and enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program to receive the latest security updates directly from the government.
