United is having a great year

United Airlines announced Tuesday that it made a healthy $273 million profit in the second quarter, up 28.4 percent from the first quarter, making it the best results for the carrier since 2007.

In another sign that the economy is recovering, the country’s third-largest airline stated per-seat revenue was up 26.9 percent and cargo revenue jumped 57 percent.

United did better than analysts surveyed by Reuters had expected, with many predicting a profit of $1.74 per share. The airline posted that it earned $1.95 per share.

The airline currently has 42,600 full-time employees, which is down 2.7 percent from one year ago.
