Himalayans in India

You may have first heard of this pretty town when Wes Anderson released his beautifully crafted film, The Darjeeling Limited.  However, the town, located in the Indian state of West Bengal, has been around for far longer and is greatly famous for its tea industry.

The town’s Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the headquarters of the Darjeeling district, situated in the Mahabharat Range, also known as the Lesser Himalaya with an average elevation of 6,710 ft.

The town was developed in the mid-19th century as the British created a sanatorium and military station. Afterward, extensive tea plantations were established in the region, and those who grew the tea created unique hybrids of black tea and developed new fermenting techniques.
