A Shot From the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition in 2007!

A few years back, I took my small little family to what was the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition, held yearly in San Diego.  It was a hot, crowded day, but the amazing sand sculptures that were prepared before us were awe-inspiring and well worth the hassle of finding parking, walking to the ocean, and fighting the crowds.  Last year, I was sad to hear that the competition had been canceled due to lack of funding.

San Diego is back with good news for the sandcastle world.  A similar, related event is back, with a new name, and new funding.  The Sun & Sea Festival, now only a one day event, will knock the socks off of Imperial Beach families this June 30th, 2013.

For this year, the competition at Sun & Sea will stick solely to the kids, who will be competing for prizes.  Family-friendly entertainment and activities will also be offered, although the final lineup has yet to be published. Famous sandcastle building teams will create sculptures for exhibition, so in addition to kid-friendly fun, you'll still see an amazing lineup of gallery-worthy temporary creations, with a life span just long enough to last through one cycle of the tides.

Get your kids ready by hitting the beaches of San Diego well in advance.  Head to the Sun & Sea website to register your kids for the competition or get tips on the best times to visit, where to park, and what to expect of the sand castle event.

San Diego residents are hopeful that this tradition will continue into 2014, but don't miss out.  Score  Cheap Flights to San Diego today and don't miss out on this family fun opportunity.
