Quirky Places to Visit in and Near Montego Bay, Jamaica

It has lush golf courses and fine dining, as well as spectacular beaches. But if you wanted a few more off the beaten path activities apart from sitting languidly in the pool, lying in a hammock, or sun tanning on Negril or Ocho Rios beaches, consider these.

Plantain Garden River:

Located in the St. Thomas Parish, this is the only river in Jamaica that flows to the east, rather than a north to south direction. Other rivers in Jamaica include the Montego River, Great River and the Negril. It is also used for recreational purposes because of the hot mineral springs found along this river. This river is definitely one for the bucket list, and an aspect of the country you can tell your friends about.
The Hip Strip:

This is renowned for its bars and restaurants and is close to famous Jamaica beaches including Doctors’ Cave (pictured). A few restaurants, such as The Pelican, are known for its Jamaican ackee and saltfish. Doctors Cave Beach is an ideal place to relax after you’ve bar-hopped for the day. Don’t forget to indulge in the locally famous, Red Stripe Beer.
Green Grotto Caves:

Technically speaking, these caves are not located in Montego Bay but in St. Ann Parish of Jamaica. You’ll find a large labyrinth of limestone caves along with many rock formations, including stalagmites. The caves are barely a mile away from where Christopher Columbus landed in 1494 and where the Spanish sought refuge during the takeover by the English in 1655.

Dunn’s River Falls & Park:

No trip to Jamaica would be complete without paying a nod to one of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls. World renowned and one of Jamaica’s national treasures, these falls are located very close to the Green Grotto Caves. The Spanish referred to the area as Las Chorreras and is extremely picturesque and beautiful and a stone’s throw from Ocho Rios. If you’re particularly adventurous, you can take a guided climb of the 940-foot (286.5-meter) falls or just relax on the beach.
