Port of Los Angeles Allows Cruise Ships to Plug In, Help Environment CheapOair Staff February 27, 2011 general Large cruise ships can now plug in at the Port of Los Angeles The Port of Los Angeles recently unveiled new technology that will help to reduce the environmental impact of large cruise ships. The port is the first in the world with the ability to provide shoreside power to three different cruise lines. Ships from Princess Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, and Norwegian Cruise Line can now turn off their engines while in port and plug in to the Alternative Maritime Power system. The system can produce a total of 40 megawatts of power and provide energy to two different ships at once. While similar technology exists in San Francisco and San Diego, the World Cruise Center in Los Angeles is the only port where two cruise ships can be connected simultaneously. Source: Gadling
