The controversy over the use of full-body scanners at U.S. airports just added yet another chapter to the saga over the pricey machines as New York Senator Chuck Schumer has introduced legislation to make distribution of body scanner images illegal.
Announced Sunday, Schumer wants anyone who misuses full-body scanner images to face up to either a year behind bars or fines up to $100,000. The TSA has already stated on numerous occasions when defending the devices that images cannot be saved, printed or transmitted and they are deleted immediately.
“This
new law will send a loud and clear message to the flying public,”
Schumer (D-N.Y.) said. “Not only will we do everything we can to protect
your safety — but the government should do everything it can to protect
your privacy as well.
