New York Amusement Park Goes on Lockdown for Two Hours CheapOair Staff August 31, 2011 general Rye Playland A fun day at Rye Playland, a New York amusement park, turned into quite the scene Tuesday when women wearing hijabs were told they couldn’t get on rides because of safety reasons. The women were a part of a 3,000 large Muslim tour group that was celebrating Eid al-Fitr, which means the end of Ramadan. Arguments amongst men and women soon followed and according to the MSNBC report, it led to two park rangers being hurt and hospitalized after they tried to get in the middle of the dispute. Parks Deputy Commissioner Peter Tartaglia stands by the move. During a phone interview he said scarves can get entangled in mechanical parts and possibly choke riders. The park closed for two hours while over 6,000 people were inside. Those arrested during the disturbance have been released.
