More body scanners to debut in airports by 2011

If everything goes according to plan, expect to see plenty more of the much talked about body scanners in airports nationwide by next year.

The Obama administration announced on Monday that the controversial devices, which will look under airline passengers’ clothing for weapons, could be in roughly half of all U.S. airports by late 2011.

With the already acquired 450 scanners set to debut throughout 2010, the $215 million plan to purchase an additional 500 more
scanners for 2011 will be the heftiest airport-security equipment upgrade since the attacks on the World Trade Center.

Currently there are only 40 body scanners throughout the United States in 19 airports.
