Super Bowl XLVII will be played at nearby New Meadowlands Stadium

The Marriott Hotel at Newark Liberty International airport will undergo a $164 million expansion in anticipation of the 2014 Super Bowl.

Super Bowl XLVIII will be played at nearby New Meadowlands Stadium.

The plan calls for the construction of a 10,000-suqare-foot ballroom and a complete overhaul of food and beverage options.

Bill Baroni, executive director for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said he envisions Newark Liberty as the gateway for the Super Bowl.

“In 2014, we will have the first-ever cold-weather Super Bowl and this lobby will be even busier,” he remarked at a press conference announcing the plan.

As part of the plan, the Port Authority extended the hotel’s lease for 40 more years.
