If you’re a sports junkie, consider booking some discount airfare and visiting or (participating in) Los Cabos’ first ever Ironman Triathlon, held on March 17, 2013. Famous for its coastline and its 1,000 mile long Baja Peninsula, Los Cabos is an ideal, picturesque location for both the triathlon and upcoming Los Cabos Open of Surf.

These two events are not back to back: the Ironman takes place in March, and the Los Cabo Open of Surf occurs in June 2013. The idea behind hosting these events is to attract top-tier athletic talent from around the world.  “We are very excited to welcome two new events – IRONMAN Los Cabos and the Los Cabos Open of Surf – to the destination this year and hope to attract visitors from around the world,” said Eduardo Segura, Director General of FITURCA, the Los Cabos Tourism Board. “It is our goal for these to become annual events much like our golf and sport fishing tournaments, which have become a staple in our annual calendar of events for the destination and attract visitors from around the globe to our piece of paradise.”

The Ironman Los Cabos is a triathalon event held on March 17th, and features a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. There are a few tapped host hotels for the event, including El Ganzo, the new kid on the hotel block, and Fiesta Americana Grand, Hola Grand Faro, The Westin Los Cabos, Hotel Posada Real, Sheraton Hacienda del Mar. These hotels will provide free ground transportation to and from the race sites for athletes, as well as family and friends planning to watch the event. On March 18 at 6 p.m., the top three places in each age group will be awarded with a trophy, and a total of $75,000 will be distributed to the top eight female and male winners at Puerto Paraiso Mall. In June, the largest surf and music festival in the history of Mexico and Latin America finds home in Los Cabos: the precise dates are June 17 – 23 at Costa Azul’s famous Zippers Beach Break (known for producing eight to 10 foot waves). Zippers Beach Break will serve as the site of one of the world’s most prestigious surf competitions, a WQS (world qualifying series) Men’s 6 Star ASP Event (Association of Surfing Professionals), which is the sport’s top regulator and now, an event partner.  Some of the best surfers in the world will compete for the chance to win a ticket to the World Championship Tour and a $155,000 cash prize.

If you’re flying out there for this competition, note that you can indulge in several beach concerts with international artists and DJs, beach bars, a food fair showcasing fresh, local cuisine, fashion shows featuring some of the top surf brands, art walks and eco-friendly activities, showcasing the best of the surf lifestyle.
