London Launches Bike Rental Program CheapOair Staff July 30, 2010 general Cycle through London with new bike rental program Bike rental programs in Europe are nothing new. Cities such as Milan, Barcelona, Paris and Zurich have fully embraced the use of two wheels as a way to travel green and get some exercise in the process. But one location that has probably needed it more than others is finally coming on board the cycle craze, as London debuts a new bike rental program. It is no secret that the city can get congested most days with automobile traffic. So the news that London Mayor Boris Johnson, who just so happens to be a cycling fanatic, is implementing a new bike rental program should be welcoming news to the many locals and visitors that want a travel alternative when navigating the Square Mile. Starting today, 4,700 of the planned 6,000 bikes will be placed throughout London in 400 docking stations. You must sign up for an annual membership, which will set you back 45 pounds ($70). The city plans to allow tourists and casual riders to rent the bikes starting something in late August or early September. Source: BBC News
