How to Welcome Fall in NYC. Photo credit: Phil Davis NY
When you feel that chill in the air, your stuffed up nose and need for extra blankets, you know that fall is just around the corner. You can have a cheap flight to New York City in any season, because it is such a versatile vacation spot; allowing for lots of unique activities that match the season. So put your flip flops and bathing suits away and bring out your UGGs and warm scarves because this is how you can welcome fall in NYC.
Enjoy a Pumpkin Spiced anything
If you haven't noticed by now, every time the Fall season arrives, there is a mass hysteria of Pumpkin Spiced products that take over. We'd like to think it began with the Pumpkin Spice latte at Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. An innocent way to jazz up a staple drink turned into a need to have Pumpkin Spiced everything. Some examples include Pumpkin Spiced Blue Moon beer, Crumbs cupcakes, even Trader Joes has Pumpkin Flavored Dog Treats. Basically, it’s all your favorite New York favorites, Pumpkinized.

Enjoy the Feast of San Gennaro
In Late-Mid September, Little Italy opens its doors to New Yorker's and the entire world to celebrate the Feast of San Gennaro. It is one of the oldest and most popular outdoor festivals to celebrate the end of summer and to welcome fall. You'll need to bring comfortable shoes and an empty stomach; because you'll walk around a lot and build up an appetite. Luckily, this festival is hosted by Italians which means you'll find lots of zeppoles, pizza and sausages. Mangia, Mangia!
Plan a crazy costume for the Village Halloween Parade
While Halloween may be mid Fall, there’s much need for preparation for this fun-filled event. Don’t just buy a costume of the rack; this is New York City! This largest public Halloween parade is crazy, chaotic and can't be missed. It takes place in The Village; one of New York City’s most eclectic neighborhoods. Some New York City inspired costumes include Lady Gaga, Lindsay Lohan, or you can just be the Big Apple.
Take a Fall Foliage Schooner Sail
Even though sailing is typically a summer activity, you may not be just yet ready to let go of the breeze in your hair feeling on the water. The same folks that provide summer sails on the harbor welcome you aboard to head up towards the fall foliage spots on the Hudson River. The breathtaking views of the cliffs of the Palisades, the Hudson River Valley and the colors of fall at their peak is well worth dressing up warm for this chilly ride. The cruise includes lunch and drinks, which makes the perfect well rounded fall experience on the water.
Enjoy Oktoberfest without leaving NYC
Face it: One of the most famous fall events in the world takes place in Germany. Oktoberfest is a grand celebration worth the flight to Europe, but may be difficult for families working, especially if they have children that just started the school season. Look no further than New York City to replicate these events at German bars, restaurants and beer gardens. One spot you must hit is the Bierhaus Hofbrau in Midtown where 6 varieties of Bavarian beer will be served along with polka music to bring on the full German experience. There is even a bratwurst eating contest; or the fall version of the July 4th hotdog eating contest.
