Family Travel: Disney's Fort Wilderness. Photo credit: Darren Witko
What do you get if you combine Disney magic and a love of the outdoors?  Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground of course. 750-acres of pine and cypress forest in the heart of Disney World's Orlando hub brings your family an outdoorsy vacation coupled with wildlife, hiking trails, a beach, entertainment, and easy access to Disney parks.

Families visiting Fort Wilderness have two options for accommodations: cabins or actual camping where you can bring your own tents or RV and set up your camp for your vacation. If actual camping isn't high on your list, consider staying at the Fort Wilderness Cabins which feature completely air-conditioned living rooms and separate bedrooms, full bathrooms, a full kitchen and dining area, private patios , and BBQ outdoor grill. Families can shop for groceries at the onsite Trading Post (or have groceries delivered!) and make a hearty meal before heading into one of the Disney World parks. Even better, housekeeping does your dishes!  If you don't want to cook, there are numerous snack bars and carts, as well as the full service Trails End Restaurant which features a great buffet. Two dinner shows, the Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Review and Mickey's Backyard BBQ offer the magical Disney experience for your meal.

Fort Wilderness is teaming with activities. Mosey up with a horse on a trail, take a wagon ride, play tennis, fish in the lake, or play arcade games. Planned activities like daily crafts, dance parties, and Disney trivia games are offered on a regular basis. Each night, gather around campfires throughout the resort for the Campfire Program with Chip and Dale. You'll roast marshmallows, enjoy cowboy songs, and of course some fun time with Chip and Dale. To cap off your day, watch a classic Disney movie outdoors under the stars. The resort also boasts a couple great water areas:  Head to the Meadow Swimmin' Pool with a main pool, kiddie pool, spa, and even a waterslide. A fort-themed water splash area (with slides!) is available for young guests.
