Family Travel: Choo Choo! Trains in Phoenix CheapOair Staff March 8, 2013 Family Travel, Interests Choo-Choo-riffic! Kids love trains. It is a pretty basic understanding. My three girls have never watched an episode of Thomas the Tank Engine, but I can say with all certainty that if there is a real train moving and working in front of them, they are all in. If your kids are as crazy over trains as the rest of the country, head to Phoenix for some Choo-Choo-riffic fun! Start your Phoenix train journey at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park. The Disneyland of all train parks, this park is impeccably clean, perfectly maintained, and incredibly fun. From large to small, this train park boasts nearly every type of train. Full size trains line the entrance including The Roald Amundsen Pullman Car, used for Presidential travel from every president from Hoover to Dwight Eisenhower, and the Magma Arizona Railroad Engine No. 6, a beautiful engine that pulled copper ore through Arizona for 38 years. A very intriguing model train museum is on site and offers your little ones plenty of eye candy to absorb: the 10,000 square foot building showcases the park’s four model railroad clubs. If they can’t wait to hop aboard, ride the mini train for only $1 or the larger train for $2! Bonus: The park is free to enter and really is a park featuring picnic tables, play structures, lots of kid-friendly running space, and even a carousel. Numerous parks around the area include nods to this town’s train loving theme including Anthem Community Park where you and your little ones can ride the Daisy Mountain Railroad over a lake, through a tunnel, and around some beautiful waterfalls. Desert Breeze Park and Railroad features a ¾ mile replica Santa Fe Style train ride during the summer months for the entire family and the nearby Arizona Railway Museum will inspire a love of the history and preservation of railway artifacts. Hop aboard the mini railroad at Freestone Park or take a free ride at the Adobe Western Railroad’s four different routes each lasting approximately 30 minutes.
