On Monday, Delta Air Lines Inc. said it asked the Transportation Department for approval to increase its flights between the U.S. and Brazil.

Delta said that if it receives the approval, it will fly more often between Detroit and San Paulo.

Delta is presently scheduled to start twice-weekly service between the two cities on October 21, and wants to increase the service to five days a week.

Detroit-Sao Paulo is a vital business route from the industrial Midwest to Brazil’s business center.

The airline said its planned services comes close to the service it eventually wants to provide. Adding to the service will also make Delta more competitive.
