After a long 127 years, the 1.1 mile long, Brooklyn Bridge will be getting a $500 million makeover. The project includes a complete repainting of the bridge, along with the repair of essentials that were part of its original construction.

Vice President Biden and Mayor Michael Bloomberg joined together on Wednesday to announce the beginning of the renovation, which is set to be completed in four years.

The funding for the project comes from the federal economic recovery act, which provided $30 million, along with the city and other federal sources.

The painting alone, last done in 1991, is estimated to take four years. Other major changes include expanding the roads leading to the bridge, from one lane to two.
