Okay, so there’s not an aquarium on Antarctica. But we do have seven aquariums on here – that should be enough for you all, right? In celebration of the widespread success of Finding Dory (is anyone really surprised?) and the revelation of her past brushes with aquariums all over the world, we put together a list of the best places across the world where you can find Dory. Well, probably not Dory because she’s a cartoon character. But you can definitely find a bunch of interesting and wacky deep sea dwellers in these top aquariums across the world! Read on and start planning your next trip around these attractions that take you under the sea:

California – Monterey Bay Aquarium

Part of California’s rugged central coast, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the most famous in the world for its creature-rich displays, 35 major galleries and its mission to preserve and inspire conservation of the oceanic environment. Located right on the edge of the ocean, the aquarium is home to 35,000 sea animals – with over 550 species inhabiting the large aquarium! Pay the west coast a visit and get ready to be inspired by its window into another world entirely.

Colombia – Parque Explora

This large park in Colombia plays host to the largest freshwater aquarium, with over 300 interactive exhibits and 400 of Colombia’s local aquatic species. Not only can visitors learn about life under the sea, they can also attend interactive exhibitions and shows in the park’s 3D cinema, learn about physics, technology and biology and work their way through the on-site children’s science museum. Established in 2009, this fun and interactive park is not just for kids – its for anyone who wants to learn about the natural life that surrounds them on their visit to Colombia.

Portugal – Lisbon Oceanarium

Built for the millennium’s last World Fair in 1998, Lisbon’s Oceanarium achieves great success in executing the exposition’s theme of “the oceans, a heritage for our future”. The aquarium manages to display all nine oceanic habitats seemingly in one display! Though the environments are separated by an invisible acrylic walls, it gives the viewer the impression that all of the environments are existing together as one. The overarching aim of the aquarium is education and drawing attention to the environmental issues that affect our marine ecosystem.

Greece – Aquaworld Aquarium and Reptile Rescue Centre

Crete’s first aquarium, Aquaworld is located in Hersonissos, Greece and provides interactive fun by having a large exhibit that encourages visitor engagement with its displays (that means you can touch the animals!). Many of the animals on display have been rescued and have found a new and loving home at Aquaworld. The aquarium’s mission is to create a culture of love and respect of the marine animal kingdom, with an aim to educate visitors about the current environmental state of the world’s oceans and other ecosystems.

South Africa – Two Oceans Aquarium

The southern tip of Africa presents an interesting marine environment: it connects two mighty oceans – the Indian and the Atlantic! Designed to show off the incredible diversity of the two marine environments, this aquarium, situated in Cape Town, is the perfect place to showcase the clash. The emphasis of this aquarium is on public education and is recognized as a leader in environmental and animal husbandry both locally and internationally.

China – Shanghai Ocean Aquarium

Located in Shanghai, this aquarium is housed in the Pudong District – right beside the famous Oriental Pearl Tower! It is recognized internationally for being one of the largest aquariums in the world as well as for having the longest underwater viewing tunnel – measuring nearly 510 feet in length. Boasting of nine different unqiue exhibitions – which play host to the nine different types of marine ecosystems, 300 different species and incredibly rare fish. Currently, the aquarium is the only one in the world to have a Chinese marine environment on display – which plays host to many types of nearly extinct types of marine life.

Australia – AQWA

The Aquarium of Western Australia (AQWA) began because its founder injured himself while diving and wondered how he could best showcase the wonders of the deep sea to people who otherwise couldn’t see it. Thus began the AQWA founder’s determination to recreate coral reefs in an aquarium environment – a feat that most do not even try to do, not to mention accomplish! Since then, the foundation has been instrumental in great white shark research, marine turtle rehabilitation and public education about our greatest resource – our marine environment. the coolest part?
