The economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic are still being felt across the globe, particularly for countries that rely on foreign tourism. Many countries depend so heavily on foreign tourism that it makes up 25% to 50% of the total gross domestic product (GDP). For some tiny countries, that percentage is even higher. Choosing a destination that needs your tourism dollars to keep its economy afloat is an ideal way to spread the monetary love as the world fights back against the negative impacts of the virus.

Here are five of the best European destinations to choose if you are interested in engaging in travel that has a strong impact your destination. Chances are, you’re looking for a change of scenery. Choosing one of these countries for your next trip is a win-win for all involved. So, it’s possible to search for cheap flights to Europe and contribute to a country’s economic comeback at the same time.

Estonia

The Northern European country of Estonia is brimming with gems to discover around every corner. Start your tour in the capital city of Tallinn, known as the most beautifully preserved medieval city in the region. Here you will find the Toompea Castle, the ancient structure that now houses the Parliament of Estonia. While in Tallinn, be sure to also check out 18th-century Kadriorg Palace and its classic Baroque architecture. Located south of Sicily and to the north of Africa, the island of Malta relies heavily on foreign tourism at a whopping 26.9% of its GDP. While in Malta, travelers delight in wandering the streets of the medieval capital of Mdina, also known as the Silent City. Other fun things to add to your Malta bucket list include a day trip to the island of Gozo and spending time at the Valletta Harbor. While in Valletta, stop by the historic Fort St. Elmo and the lush Upper Barrakka Gardens. History buffs will appreciate a trip to the 16th-century Mosta Dome, known for narrowly missing a bomb explosion during World War II. Lastly, you do not want to miss touring the San Anton Gardens and the adjacent San Anton Palace in Attard.
