No two couples are the same. Then, why should your romantic getaways be? It’s only natural that you and your significant other might want your next travel destination to be as special as you are. A true reflection of the things that you love, do, and share as an couple. So, now’s when the hard part comes: how do you find a place that as the perfect balance of seclusion, excitement, and relaxation…while also avoiding the hordes of honeymooners while you’re there?

It’s no easy task, that’s for sure. But hey, that’s where we come in! If you’re looking for truly underrated romantic destinations to ditch the crowds and avoid the tourist traps, here are some under-the-radar destinations around the world you should consider.

The Seychelles Islands

Off the east coast of Africa lie 116 white-sand, palm-fringed, picture-perfect beaches that coalesce into the crystal-clear and turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. We’re talking about spectacular Seychelles archipelago, a tried and tested paradise on Earth. You have tons of options for all your sun-soaked dreams, from finding a treehouse-style villa in an actual tree in the rainforest to booking a room in a high-end, all-inclusive resort on the ultra-private North Island. If you plan ahead, you can totally enjoy a crowd-free Seychelles vacation so you can soak up some rays — and romance — in peace.

San Sebastián — Spain

The magnificent Playa de la Concha is one of San Sebastián’s main attractions.

Considered one of the crown jewels of Spain, this Basque Country beach town will have you saying maite zaitut (“I love you”) in no time. San Sebastián (or Donostia, as the local Basques call it) is home to breathtaking beaches, awe-inspiring architecture, and, most importantly, delicious delicacies all over the town. In fact, this town holds not one, not five, not even ten… but eighteen Michelin Stars within a twenty-five-kilometer radius. To put that into perspective, San Sebastián beats out other famous foodie cities such as Paris and New York City by a landslide.

While you’re here, if you want to enjoy the quintessential Basque Country cuisine, be sure to try the pintxos (pronounced “peen-cho”), which are bite-sized pieces of meat, fish, or vegetables served on top of small pieces of bread. Oh, and don’t forget to sink your teeth into some seafood. Salt cod, boquerones en vinagre (pickled anchovies) and kokotxas (fish cheeks) are just a few of the world-renowned fish dishes you must try on your romantic getaway in San Sebastián.

Zhangye — China

The Rainbow Mountains of China are simply breathtaking. These sand-art looking arches and mountain peaks are actually a landform unique to China, formed over millions of years by mineral deposits and natural erosion and are part and parcel to this area’s breathtaking natural beauty. Once a major port along the Silk Road, and now home to many Tibetan Buddhists, Zhangye boasts some of the most iconic temples and grottoes in the world. These structures are perched on mountainsides and require a little bit of hiking to get to. Once you’ve arrived, cozy up next to your loved one and walk hand-in-hand through narrow passageways inside the mountain to reach the caverns converted into ornately-decorated prayer rooms. If you can, plan to be there while a festival is taking place so that you can witness local folk dances and music performances. All that and genuine Chinese food like you’ve never tasted before!

Lofoten Islands — Norway

If a romantic trip for two means venturing to the picturesque great outdoors, Lofoten is sure to send your sporty senses soaring. Just off Norway’s northwest coast, you’ll find colorful fishing villages, majestic fjords, and, in the summertime, a sun that never sets. Yes, you read that right. In this part of Norway, you can experience something called the midnight sun, a natural occurrence when the sun remains visible until midnight. From the painters and authors who are drawn here for its rugged beauty to the active adventurers looking to bike, hike, surf and fish, Lofoten has attracted travelers of all types… especially in the summer, when you can take part in all these activities all day long!

Crete — Greece

Even though it’s one of the largest and most spectacular of the Greek islands, Crete doesn’t get enough love. While honeymooners and hopeless romantics alike flock to popular islands such as Mykonos and Santorini, far fewer venture out to this incredibly scenic — and more affordable — southern Greek island. If you’re planning a trip here, remember that the island is split into four administrative regions: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion, and Lassithi, each known for its own specialties. Chania and Rethymno are the westernmost prefectures of Crete, and are considered the most romantic of the lot, with their quaint alleyways, stunning Byzantine architecture, and your pick of beautiful, secluded beaches.

To the east lies Heraklion and Lassithi, both brimming with charming little villages, medieval castles, unique Caribbean-style vibes and beaches, and the famous Ideon Cave, where — according to Greek mythology — the powerful Zeus grew up. Crete is also home to an amazing food scene, so those romantic waterfront dinners are sure not to disappoint.
