Popping the ultimate question to your loved one comes with its own story, especially if you decide to get down on one knee somewhere far away from home. Proposing while traveling lends itself to fairy-tale fantasies, especially when the backdrop is inherently romantic. From destinations you treasure as a couple to merely just a dreamed setting you two have always wanted to visit, we have rounded up some of the world’s most romantic spots to pop the question.

The Eiffel Tower, France

It’s hard to imagine a time when the Eiffel Tower wasn’t a part of the Parisian identity. When Gustave Eiffel designed it as a temporary exhibition for the 1889 World’s Fair, it faced opposition and artistic objections. It wasn’t supposed to last more than 20 years after construction, but the Eiffel Tower endured. All you need is a flights to France to profess your undying love in front of Paris’s most iconic and arguably romantic symbol. Measuring 320 meters tall, those looking for a spot to propose with the Eiffel Tower in view won’t be hard pressed to find several corners around Paris. One of the best shots comes from the wide esplanade at the Palais de Chaillot across the Seine.

Uluru, Australia

If you want to convey to your SO that they are your rock in life, Australia has an engagement spot for you. Uluru, also called Ayer’s Rock, lords over Uluru-Kata Tujuta National Park. The mysterious monolith enchants by its sheer size and changing colors based on the time of day and the season. Measuring 3.6 kilometers long and 348 meters tall, it is even thought that roughly two-thirds of the rock is buried beneath the sand. Those seeking a landscape synonymous with Australia’s Outback to pop the question can’t get much better than Uluru. Choose to propose at sunset when Uluru lights up in a brilliant burnt orange.

The natural phenomenon of the Northern Lights occurs in a number of locales across the globe from Alaska to Finland. However, Norway claims one of the best spots for hunting the Northern Lights. Formed by particles emitted by the sun, the phenomenon produces a luminous sky of greens, pinks and purples when those particles interact with the atmosphere. Usually occurring from September through April, you can plot to propose under the Northern Lights in Norway mostly in the northern parts of the country. Some of the best spots include Hammerfest, the Lofoten islands, Lyngenfjord, Narvik and Tromsø. While picking the right conditions to experience this celestial dance across the sky takes a bit of planning, the end result is an engagement that appears truly out of this world.

The Taj Mahal, India

Romantic couple enjoy the view of the Taj Mahal at Agra, India.
While your profession of love might pale in comparison to Emperor Shah Jahan’s ultimate testament to the love of this third wife Mumtaz Mahal, there is perhaps no more romantic a setting to pop the question than the Taj Mahal. Built by the emperor for his late wife after she died giving birth to their 14th child, the building is often toted as the most beautiful edifice in the world. With its center onion dome and serene reflecting pool, the Taj Mahal took 20,000 laborers to build and over 20 years to complete. You might not be able to give your loved one a 17th century landmark visited by millions, but you can give them an engagement with the Taj Mahal looking on in the distance. Sunrise proves especially romantic or on one of the full moon viewing dates every month.

Wailua Falls, Kauai

If the thought of hiking through wilderness with an expensive ring in your pocket is too terrifying to stomach, Kauai has a romantic option for your proposal spot without the hike. Wailua Falls sits at the south end of the Wailua River. Famously known for its appearance in the opening credits of the TV show Fantasy Island, the falls are idyllic for engagements as they feature two cascading waterfalls dropping 80 feet into a glistening pool below. Legend has it that Hawaiian royalty would show the common people they were monarchs and not men by jumping into the pool from the top of the falls. Morning proposals are sometimes treated to a rainbow over the waterfalls.

Destination proposals can help you say you want to spend the rest of your life with a person, all while doing so in an exotic, spellbinding local. These proposal spots around the globe are sure to make your engagement sing.
