“Hamilton” Finally Going on Tour! Did Your City Get Its Shot? Mandy Voisin June 28, 2016 Arts & History, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco Theater fans, music lovers, history buffs and rappers, unite! Hamilton the musical is finally hitting the road. The hip-hop musical about the life and infamous death of Alexander Hamilton has blown up in New York City, but its expensive tickets and limited availability have only piqued the public’s interest, since demand is so high. Featuring music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the musical swept the Tony’s with a record breaking 16 nominations! And finally, the show is coming to a city near you. Chicago is the first lucky city to host the show, starting September 27, 2016 at the PrivateBank Theater. The tickets went on sale last week and quickly sold out – a scene reminiscent of the Broadway darling’s story last year when tickets for the New York shows sold out immediately, with tickets being bought nearly a year in advance. The lucky few camped out in Chicago to wait for their chance to see the breakthrough musical. The West Coast will also get their shot at seeing the musical, with showings in San Francisco and Los Angeles at the SHN Orpheum Theater and Hollywood Pantages Theater, respectively. The show in San Francisco will open in March 2017 and run for 21 weeks while the Los Angeles showing will run from August 11, 2017 through to December 20, 2017. The lead producer of Hamilton, Jeffrey Seller, said he chose San Francisco and Los Angeles because they are in large metro areas where other popular musicals have succeeded – Wicked in particular. “We make these decisions based on the size of the market and the power of the market to sell tickets for long periods of time,” he said. The New York show will continue to run indefinitely and there is also a possibility it will be crossing the seas to London. Don’t see your city on the tour schedule?
