When wandering through Florence, Italy, one must check out the Ponte Vecchio (which is Italian for “Old Bridge”). This Medieval bridge was built over the Arno River and is an extremely popular destination for locals and visitors. The Ponte Vecchio has seen a few setbacks since it was first constructed in 996. It was destroyed by a flood in 1117 and later rebuilt to only be knocked down again by flood waters in 1333.

Third time was the charm for the bridge, as it was restored yet again in 1345 and has been standing strong ever since. During World War 2 the Ponte Vecchio was the only bridge in Florence spared by the German army’s bombs due to an order by Adolf Hitler. Today the bridge is host to shops that sell jewelry, artwork, and souvenirs.
