JFK’s Largest Runway to Undergo Major Renovations CheapOair Staff January 11, 2010 general JFK Airport’s main runway will be closed starting in March Just what New Yorkers need – more congestion. John F. Kennedy International Airport announced Sunday that their largest runway is looking a little tired and needs a face lift. The renovations will begin this March and shut down the runway for four months. How big is this runway? Well it handles one-third of JFK’s total traffic and more than half of its departures. Yeah, pretty big! To help ease the pain somewhat, passengers of Delta and JetBlue will see fewer flights. But the work on the runway will cause more delays. Airline officials insist it will not be a problem, but I guess they will be flying out of Newark. The work being done to JFK’s main runway includes wider lanes, replacing asphlat with concrete and new lighting/electricial systems. Once the work is done, the new runway should help reduce delays…hopefully. Source: Associated Press Flickr: Mr. Mystery
