The death toll continues to mount in the days following the massive 7.0 earthquake that destroyed most of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, with many predicting a loss of life in the hundreds of thousands.

The United States has led the relief effort, with many other countries from around the world arriving by the hour to Port-au-Prince in order to aid the thousands of people that have been affected by this catastrophic event.

While many people have volunteered to fly to Haiti to help out in the recovery, not everyone is able to do so. If you are one of those people, then check out these simple ways in which you can make a difference.

If you have a cellphone (and who doesn’t?), you can actually text a donation. When doing so, BEWARE OF SCAMMERS.

Text HAITI to 90999 –
The U.S. Dept of State’s Web site has suggested that people looking to help with relief should text a $10 donation to the Red Cross. The $10 charge will show up on your next cellphone bill.

Texting YELE to 501501
– Haitian-born musician Wyclef Jean started a grassroots movement called Yele Haiti to help out his home country. By texting, you will automatically donate $5 for a great cause.

If texting a donation is not your thing, then you can make a contribution online or over the phone to such reputable assocations as the Red Cross (1-800-RED-CROSS) and Doctors Without Borders (1-888-392-0392).
