American Airlines could win antitrust immunity this week

There are definitely some smiling faces at American Airlines these days as the carrier may finally win approval this week to form partnerships with other airlines without dealing with antitrust laws.

AA and four members of the Oneworld alliance (British Airways, Iberia, Finnair and Royal Jordanian Airlines) are requesting antitrust immunity in order to be allowed to work together on marketing and operations.

What’s more, American, British Airways and Iberia are hoping to get permission to do business together more closely so that they may be able to match up schedules, set pricing and provide frequent-flier benefits.

Various news outlets and insiders are predicting a decision will be announced by Wednesday. Officials for American were not available for comment on this news story.
