Hawaii’s Papahanaumokuakea Only U.S. Location Added to Updated UNESCO List CheapOair Staff August 3, 2010 general It may be hard to spell and even harder to pronounce, but Hawaii's Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument has just been added to the updated U.N. World Heritage List. This is actually the first time since 1995 that a U.S. site has been included on the prestigious UNESCO list. The other 20 U.S. sites on the list include the Statue of Liberty, Yosemite National Park and Grand Canyon National Park. President George W. Bush made the area a national monument in 2006. The Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument is described by the Associated Press as "a pristine haven for coral and other marine life, and a treasured site of ancient Hawaiian shrines."
