The museum's modern design has been the source of controversy

After 10 years and over $100 million, the Museum of Liverpool finally opened its doors to the public Tuesday. The embattled institution celebrates the history of Liverpool and examines its curious existence as the second city of the British Empire.

Hailed as the world’s greatest urban history museum, it details all aspects of life in Liverpool, tracing a timeline from the feudal to the Beatles.

Originally set to open in 2008, the museum’s debut was delayed several times over a litany of construction and design disputes.

Though its modern architecture has rubbed some the wrong way, curators are certain the Museum of Liverpool will quickly become a favorite English destination among domestic and international visitors.
