Government officials in Indonesia say they are looking into building a new airport in Jakarta, as the capital’s main airport struggles to keep up with current passenger growth. 

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport now serves about 35 million passengers a year, a number that expands 15 to 20 percent annually.

While director general for airport transit Herry Bakti says there are plans to expand the current hub, it is also likely that another airport is in Jakarta’s near future.

"We plan for multiple airports in the Jakarta metropolitan area," Bakti said.

The Indonesian government has asked the Japan International Cooperation Agency to conduct a study looking into the main airport's expansion as well as the development of new facilities in Jakarta.

Indonesia and Japan signed a deal last month that will allow Japan to fund transport projects around Jakarta worth 2 trillion yen.
