O'Hare International Airport expands American Airlines and United Airlines both filed lawsuits this week to halt Chicago's plans to start construction on the expansion of O'Hare Airport, both citing the city government did not receive clearance from the carriers before giving the green light to the $3.4 billion project at the Windy City's busy airport.

But the question being asked this week is whether or not an airline has the right to stop construction at an airport. As far as both AA and UA are concerned they do, since the cost of the expansion is more than likely going to be passed on to them with various fees and charges.

Chicago Department of Aviation Commissioner Rosemarie Andolino said "timing is essential" and the expansion needs to happen now. Andolino added, "The opportunity to realize the benefits … cannot be lost."
