As the chaos in Egypt continues to escalate, many world governments are now coordinating efforts to evacuate their citizens from the embattled nation.

A travel warning issued by the State Department on Sunday recommended that US citizens avoid any non-essential travel to Egypt. Monday it began evacuation efforts, offering chartered flights to safe zones in Europe for all citizens and non-emergency employees.

Private travel security companies are also working to aid Americans in need. Many are reporting contact from American students studying in Egypt who are looking to return home. Most of the students had just started a new semester abroad when the violence broke out.

Until citizens can safely secure a flight, they are being urged to remain indoors and away from possible protest sites. They are also being asked to monitor radio broadcasts for the latest information on the scheduled charters.

Although Cairo’s international airport remains open, the unrest has impeded food, staff, and fuel from getting to the airport in a timely manner. As a result, many flights are experiencing delays of up to 12 hours.
