The FAA announced new rules after a string of incidents

A string of embarrassing incidents involving neglectful air traffic controllers this month has led the FAA to take action.

Officials announced the firing of two controllers, one in Miami and one in Knoxville, Tennessee. Both were recently caught sleeping on the job.

Following an aborted landing Monday of a plane carrying Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, the FAA also announced new rules for flights carrying the First Lady or Vice President.

Those flights must now be handled by an air traffic supervisor; the same rule is already in effect for presidential flights.

Michelle Obama’s flight was forced to abort its landing after an error brought it too close to a cargo plane. The flight later landed safely.
