Expansion at Myrtle Beach International Airport Continues on Schedule CheapOair Staff June 15, 2011 general The sun sets over Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Construction work to expand Myrtle Beach International Airport is continuing on schedule as the hub experiences one of its busiest years to date. The airport expects to welcome 1 million passengers for the first time in 2011. The construction, set to wrap up in early 2013 will add six gates to the airport. Officials are hoping the additional gates will encourage more airlines and passengers to fly into Myrtle Beach, especially those lying just outside of driving distance. As gas prices rise, tourism officials are growing increasingly concerned about losing visitors who have to drive more than eight hours to get to the beach resort town.
