Virgin America announced this week that it would be investing $1.4 billion in a quieter, cleaner, and more fuel efficient jet engine from GE.

The airline plans to install 60 of the LEAP engines across its fleet in the next five years. 30 of the turbines will power current generation Airbus A320s with 30 more installed in new A320s by 2016.

The engines will reportedly save the airline $1.6 million in fuel costs for each aircraft annually while increasing range by up to 400 miles. The engines will also drastically cut emissions of greenhouse gases and lower noise pollution by up to 15 decibels.

CEO David Cush insisted that the airline remains committed to its goal of using 10% biofuel by 2020. However, he believes upgrading existing engine technology now will help Virgin America remain a step ahead of the competition as rising fuel prices continue to plague the industry.
