Visit these unique U.S. hoods

Being that the U.S. is such a large country, it may be hard to pinpoint the best cities or area's to live in. We are familiar with the must see cities such as New York, Miami and San Francisco, but what makes a city unique are the neighborhoods. Their inhabitants reflect why it is worth digging a little deeper into the city to discover what makes it truly unique.

The Pearl District – Portland, Oregon: Formerly an area of industrial warehouses, downtown Portland's Pearl district has undergone a serious facelift. Warehouses are now home to luxurious lofts, townhouses and condos. This urban-chic neighborhood offers superior dining, from fresh pizza to European cuisine.  Look out for Jamison Square; a fountain area simulating a tidal pool with artificial waterfalls. Also, take a ride on the Portland Streetcar; a convenient light rail system.

BoCoCa – Brooklyn, New York: This umbrella term stands for three distinct Brooklyn neighborhoods: Boerum Hill, Cobble Hill and Carroll Gardens. Brooklyn itself is the up and coming borough, but many overlook this area, perhaps because the name of it is so long. You've got Cobble Hill which is lined up with brownstones and tucked away dining and nightlife options.  Boerum Hill draws visitors with fun boutiques and independent shops.  While Carroll Gardens; the once longstanding Italian neighborhood is now home to vintage shops, cafes and front garden brownstones. Each area is distinct and a breath of fresh air from the crowds in Brooklyn Heights.

Old City – Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: Call it Philadelphia's original neighborhood, the historic area of the Old City holds up to its name. Quakers first arrived here to settle and develop this now trendy area. It is the prime location for sightseeing; home to Independence Hall, Independence National Historic Park and is also a National historic district itself. Locals and tourists flock to many dive bars, lounges and eclectic restaurants that are offered. Check out First Friday; a monthly event featuring open houses by art/design galleries and boutiques.

Uptown – Charlotte, North Carolina: Ironically, Uptown Charlotte is really considered the downtown center area of the city. Despite the confusing name, it is where all the action is taking place. Many Fortune 500 companies headquarter here, which attracts booming hotels and entertainment venues.  Though it is divided into four wards, one can enjoy a little bit of everything in this busy neighborhood. Enjoy activities such as the NASCAR Hall of Fame, the beautiful ImaginOn Public Library and the newly opened Mint Museum of Modern Art.

Hyde Park – Austin, Texas: Also recognized as a historic district, Hyde Park is recognized for its beautiful tree lined streets. Due to its proximity to the University of Texas at Austin, youthful college students and professionals have revitalized the area. Make sure to enjoy the views of Texan style Victorian homes and bungalows. Though it may be a popular neighborhood, it is known for its friendly community and neighborhood parks where one can just relax and enjoy a nice summer day.
