American has signed billion dollar orders with Boeing and Airbus

After weeks of speculation, American Airlines has announced aircraft orders with two of the world’s premier plane makers.

In addition to an order of 200 narrow-body aircraft from Boeing, the airline also requested 260 Airbus A320 aircraft, a move that ends a 20 year Boeing monopoly on American Airlines planes.

In all, the carrier has signed deals for 440 aircraft worth an estimated $38.5 billion with future purchasing rights for 465 more.

The deal with Boeing includes orders for 100 Next-Generation 737s.
