A growing movement to name a Colorado mountain peak after late singer John Denver is being met with some resistance this week.

Thousands of Coloradans have signed a petition urging the renaming of Mt. Sopris near where Denver was said to write his smash hit, “Rocky Mountain High.” The hit single would later go on to become the official state song of Colorado.

However, some are not so mile high on the idea. Because the peak in question is located within a wilderness protection area, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names has jurisdiction over any proposed name change. According to the board’s chairman, Lou Yost, a 1964 law discourages name changes in protected areas.

Still, John Denver fans are hoping an exception is made for Mr. Denver and his potential new namesake. Not only is the mountain located near the hallowed grounds of “Rocky Mountain High,” they argue, it also overlooks 1,000 acres of land that Denver donated to the public before his untimely death.
