Colorado is an adventurists’ outdoor paradise. It’s easily one of the top destinations for adventure activities book cheap flights to, not just in the U.S., but the entire world. While it may be assumed that you have to get out of Colorado’s big cities to experience the best adventure sports, there are many in and around Denver. Below you’ll find a few of the top adventure sports for the adrenaline junkie the next time you visit Denver.

Hike a 14er: You’ll have no problem finding a 14,000-ft. mountain in Colorado, as it features one of the highest concentrations of 14ers in the world. While you can choose from any number of Colorado mountains, I recommend Pikes Peak, which is in nearby Colorado Springs. Pikes Peak is of moderate difficulty, rising several thousand feet over 13 miles.

Whitewater rafting: While you can’t do it in the city itself, there are plenty of whitewater rafting opportunities near Denver. One of the closest places to go whitewater rafting is just west of Denver in Idaho Springs. Idaho Springs is home to a 14,000-ft. mountain itself, Mt. Evans, which makes this a top adventure destination close to Denver. Half-day and full-day rafting trips are available, some of which can be combined with other side trips like mining, hot springs, and bicycling.

Ziplining: What was once a popular activity through rainforests is now growing in popularity in the U.S. One of the best things about ziplining is that it requires no previous experience. Simply get a few minutes of instruction, put on some gear, and you’re ready to go for the ride of your life. There are several different zipline tours located in and around Denver.

Skiing: It’s hard to talk adventure activities in Colorado and not talk snow sports. With destinations like Aspen and Breckenridge nearby, the Denver area features some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the U.S. If you’re looking to add a little challenge and adventure, give snowboarding a try.

Snowmobiling: If you’re not so much the skiing type, but still want to be out on the snow, then rent a snowmobile for the day. The Denver and Boulder areas both offer prime snowboarding terrain during the winter months. Some tour providers offers guided tours, while the more adventurous can try their hand at renting one themselves, although we recommend doing this with someone else to make for a safer and more enjoyable excursion.
