It’s hard to believe fall is already here. For many people who have experienced long periods of hot temperatures, September is a welcome relief. With Labor Day weekend typically marking the last good weekend for a beach vacation, that means it’s time to start looking at some other destinations to book cheap flights. Today we feature some of the south’s best fall destinations.

Charlotte, North Carolina: Charlotte it is the best of both worlds. With it central North Carolina location, it’s a short drive to the mountains, yet features a vibrant city life. After a scenic day of driving through the North Carolina Mountains and viewing the fall foliage, you can come back to Charlotte for an evening out on the town. There are also some great events happening in the fall, including the Charlotte BBQ and Blues Festival.

Asheville, North Carolina: Asheville is often one of the most underrated destinations in America. One visit and you’ll see why. Some of America’s most beautiful drives are within a short drive of Asheville. Not to mention the east coast’s highest peak: Mt. Mitchell. Asheville also features one of the most eclectic cultures on the East Coast, a fun mid-sized city for shopping, art, restaurants, and nightlife.

Nashville, Tennessee: Similar to Asheville and Charlotte, Nashville is a great choice because of the mixed bag of options it offers. All in the same day you can be hiking trails and later on be enjoying a pub crawl through the city. Music lovers will appreciate attractions like the Country Music Hall of Fame and the world famous Studio B tour.

Washington, D.C.: Summer isn’t always a great time to visit Washington, D.C. because it can be so hot, which makes the fall a great option with temperatures cooling down. There’s nothing like seeing some of the world’s most notable landmarks behind the backdrop of beautiful fall foliage. This is one of the best times of year to visit the National Arboretum, which features over 400 acres of trees and plants, making for a nice afternoon walk.

Charleston, South Carolina: We couldn’t talk fall destinations and not include at least one beach destination. If you want to get some beach time, you’ll want to go earlier in the fall, but middle and late fall still makes for pleasant days in and around Charleston. The Charleston area features great restaurants and bars that have outdoor patios, making this the best season for enjoying an evening on an outdoor patio overlooking the water.
