Travel Tips: First Time Flyer, Flickr: re-alityIf you’re a newbie to flying, chances are you’re nervous. The media and news sensationalism about the TSA doesn’t always help when it comes to making travelers feel at ease.

But flying for the first time doesn’t have to make you feel too nervous. Here are some travel tips to help you through the big moment:

Stay Positive: A healthy mental attitude can be really key to a good flight. In his book, The Power of Positive Thinking, Norman Vincent Peale says, “Any fact facing us is not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure.” Think of all the positive aspects of flying, such as ease of commute and how much longer it would take you to arrive at a destination via other means of transport, and keep your chin up!

Stay Hydrated: No matter how long the flight, the key to enjoying an altitude of 20,000 feet plus involves hydration. Studies have shown that people are comfortable at a 50% humidity level, and as you fly, the cabin humidity can fall to as low as 1%. Bottom line? Bottoms up (the non alcoholic kind!).

Consult Your Doctor Before You Fly: If you’re prone to anxiety and other medical conditions, you may want to consult your doctor to make sure he approves your condition to fly. He may prescribe you a mild sedative to take during the flight if necessary. The bottom line? Enjoying the flight is key!

Bring Relaxing Music: If music soothes you while you travel, program your iPod or phone to have a soothing playlist, even if it is meditative music or the sound of waterfalls. Put a few tunes that will give you energy –if that’s your thing—so you can brave the flight.

Watch the Inflight Entertainment: Flying is a great way to catch up on the movies you may have missed at the theater; plus, the entertainment will make you forget you are up in the air. Also, remember to reserve any special meals in advance because you certainly don’t want to arrive at your destination too hungry! And last but not least, make sure you get your miles for your first cheap flight. You may end up a frequent flyer!
