Get Greasy!

Stuffing your face? It’s the American way or at least a guaranteed fun way spend your Fourth of July. So, in honour of U.S. Excess, London restaurant Big Easy is once again laying down the gauntlet to would be competitors for another round of its now legendary Fourth of July rib eating competition.

Yeah, America might have gained their independence from England, but history schmistory, the Brits know a good opportunity to throw an awesome party. Actually stalwart of the Chelsea dining scene, Big Easy, has been around for years attracting expat and visiting Americans for a slice of home as well as Londoners hankering for a bit of American comfort food.
The King’s Road “barbecue and crab shack” eatery will play host to ten of London’s hungriest guys and gals, as they beef up to lock horns in a meat lovers’ frenzy to eat as many racks of home smoked meaty ribs as they can in 30 minutes. As competitors quickly fall by the side a panel of independent judges will crown two champions amid the piles of bones, with the winner receiving a £100 Big Easy voucher and the honour of having their name proudly engraved on Big Easy’s wall of fame. The Big Easy rib competition record is a total of seven racks.
The competition kicks off at 6 p.m. sharp, and it’s free to enter. Competitors are asked only to come “armed with an elasticated waistband and the will to win.” Think you’ve got what it takes to be a winner or at least like the idea of eating a lot of free ribs? You can sign up via email: enquiries@bigeasy.co.uk. Just make sure to include your full name and contact details when you do.
If seeing how many ribs you can eat in half an hour sounds like more of a spectator sport to you, there’s still plenty of good reason to head over to Big Easy on the Fourth. To celebrate American Independence Day, Big Easy will offer customers a range of specials for those who’d rather dine at a less competitive pace. For one night only, patrons can choose “The Works” burger, featuring two prime beef patties, bacon, cheese and onion for £12.95 (about $20); lobster roll, fries, salad and free frozen margarita for £19.50 ($30); whole 2lb lobster with fries and salad for £19.50, or a “Big Pig Gig” – the “ultimate” in all you can eat BBQ. And save some room for a slice of red velvet cake and for slurping down a few specially created cocktails including red, white and blue margaritas.
Big Easy is located at 332-334 Kings Road, SW3 5UR. There’ll be live music on the Fourth of July from 8 p.m. Booking ahead is advised. You can find contact details and more at www.bigeasy.co.uk.
