Spring break is that special time of the year that everybody loves or hates. Twenty-somethings crowd airports and destinations all over to enjoy a much needed break during university studies. With warm weather, lovely beaches and a party atmosphere, it is no wonder why Miami is a top spring break choice for students. If you’ve got cheap flights to Miami and traveling during spring break, here are some tips if you want to join the fun, or avoid the madness.

Pack Lots of Sunscreen/Suntan Lotion

It may be almost spring and technically winter, but it can still get hot, hot, hot in Miami. With temperatures reaching the 80s, that makes perfect beach conditions. But, if you’re normally spending your winter in cold temperatures, the sudden change may do more damage to your skin that you’d want to know. Always reapply when you’re at the beach to avoid coming back to school with awkward burns or uneven tans.

Plan Your Trip Right

The timeline for spring break varies depending on the university. The majority of spring breakers arrive sometime between March and early April. Those looking for a party may consider arriving for special events, like the Winter Music Conference in Miami. This is a popular electronic dance music event where the city streets and beach shorelines turn into clubs- day and night! If this isn’t really your scene, avoid South Beach and downtown Miami and head north towards the beaches in Hollywood or Aventura for some rest and relaxation away from the spring break-palooza.

Travel in a Group

More than likely, if you’re visiting Miami for spring break, you’ll be traveling with fellow friends that want in on the fun. Traveling together is the best way to enjoy Miami during this high season where prices may increase and availability is tough. Consider renting suites or asking hotels if their rooms allow more guests in a room. This will decrease your room rate per night since you’re splitting it with more people. Travel in groups to the beach not only because it’s more fun that way, but to make sure your stuff doesn’t get stolen since the beaches will be packed!

Enjoy or Avoid Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive is one of the highlights when visiting South Beach. Since its right by the beachfront, it’s filled with restaurants, bars and clubs for spring breakers to enjoy. Famous places include Mango’s Tropical, CJs Crab Shack & The Clevelander. You’ll see beach babes and bums sipping on large margarita bowls with two Coronas, which often spells spring break trouble. Visit Ocean Drive during the early morning to enjoy the architecture, old Cuban cars and vintage hotels if you want to avoid the spring break crowds.

Crowds

Love it or Hate it: Let’s face it- Miami is one of the spring capitals of America. There is nice weather, plenty of hotels and venues and a pulsating nightlife with no end. But the best part are the white sand and turquoise water beaches. Don’t be surprised if you arrive around noon and find it difficult to grab a spot by the water. The upside is you’ll definitely meet lots of fun and friendly faces who you’ll enjoy sharing the beach time with. If you’re a beach snob and you take your power bronzing seriously, the earlier, the better- after all, most will be nursing hangovers!
